Turn-Key Tunneling, Inc. recently purchased a 15' (180") OD tunnel shield to build a series of pedestrian tunnels in Philadelphia, PA. The first tunnel consisted of 85' of tunnel liner plate structure under a live South Eastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority - SEPTA rail line with less than 7' of cover. The pedestrian tunnel allowed for a safer passage for foot traffic to the Malvern Rail Station and allowed SEPTA to meet ADA requirements.
The same shield was used to construct another pedestrian tunnel in Glendolen, PA. The TSE shield was deployed below an active rail line to construct a 53' long pedestrian tunnel. The primary reason for this tunnel was to remove foot traffic from a one lane road that connected two busy city properties. These properties were home to numerous sports fields and recreational facilities that were becoming a safety factor due to the traffic situation. The 15' pedestrian tunnel was ADA compliant and provided an added aesthetic to the city's structure.
Shields can be custom ordered per your size requirements and can be constructed from 48" OD to 196" OD. TSE shields will allow you to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the location with minimal environmental impact.
